Brotherhoods and Guilds

27

A living tradition

More than fifty processional floats are part of Alicante Holy Week. The origins of the oldest Brotherhoods and Guilds date back to the late 15th century.

Although it cannot be ruled out that some existed even earlier, their documentation has not survived to the present day. The 27 Brotherhoods and Guilds, each with its own distinctive character and identity, bring together devotion and religious faith with the light, sea and colours of Alicante, creating an eclectic Holy Week full of nuances.

The Official Route runs through the city centre along Rambla de Méndez Núñez, between the Bank of Spain and Portal de Elche, just a few metres from the historic quarter. It is a meeting point for all the Brotherhoods and Guilds as they make their way through the streets from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
