IDENTITY AND SYMBOLISM
The coat of arms
Its main elements are the Holy Cross and the nails, symbols of the Passion of Christ, framed by a square scroll bearing the name of the Brotherhood's principal sacred image. At the top is the crown of thorns, also a symbol of Christ's Passion, from which rays emanate, representing the omnipotence of God.
PROCESSIONAL ATTIRE AND BROTHERHOOD IDENTITY
Processional attire
The traditional attire worn by this Brotherhood consists of a purple tunic with matching buttons and hood. Members also wear a white cape bearing the Brotherhood's coat of arms at shoulder height. White gloves and a white waist cord complete the attire, together with black footwear and the Brotherhood's medal.
ORIGINS AND HISTORY
History of the Brotherhood
This Brotherhood brings together residents of the popular Villafranqueza neighbourhood, known as “El Palamó”. It began to take shape in 1992 and joined the Board of Holy Week Brotherhoods and Guilds on 27 October 1992.
It took part in a procession for the first time on Palm Sunday, 4 April 1993, bringing its procession to the streets of Alicante city centre.
The principal sacred image, the Christ of the Finding, comes from the Convent of the Capuchin Sisters in Alicante. It was donated to the convent by Lluisa Conca i Amorrich, who had inherited it from her mother in 1777. This Levantine Baroque sculpture underwent restoration several years ago to address problems that threatened its preservation. The Christ is carried on the shoulders of bearers on an aluminium platform and is accompanied by twelve men dressed in Hebrew attire, representing the twelve apostles, as well as a group of women wearing traditional mantillas and carrying the symbols of the Passion.
Our Lady of Sorrows was commissioned privately by the Royal Councillor of Alicante. It dates from the 19th century and was enthroned on 18 September 1803.
Since 14 June 2012, Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias, now King and Queen of Spain, have been members of this Brotherhood's Honorary Board.
