ORIGINS AND HISTORY

History of the Guild

The origins of the Guild date back to the 19th century, when it was one of the largest processional floats to be seen during Holy Week in Alicante. Like so many others, the original float depicting the Sentence of Jesus, created by the sculptor Mr Antonio Riudavets, disappeared during the turbulent events of the 1930s.

The idea of re-establishing this Guild took shape following the proclamation delivered by the well-known Alicante brotherhood member Mr Pepe Carrión at the Institutional Ceremony of the Brotherhood of the Arrest of Jesus in 2002. During a lively discussion, the possibility of recovering the floats that had disappeared in 1931 was raised. The mystery float depicting the Sentence of Jesus was one of those still awaiting recovery.

On 1 July 2002, the first Governing Board of the new Guild was established and the corresponding founding minutes were drawn up. The Guild's emblem was to be an unfurled scroll bearing the inscription "Sentence: Jesus Condemned to Death", placed above a crossed scourge and reed, all framed by a crown of thorns.

At the same time, the processional attire for the Nazarenes was designed: a red tunic, red sash and red pointed hood, together with white lace on the outer sleeve cuffs. These are the original colours of the Guild, as recorded in the chronicles of Mr Víctor Viñez and Mr Rafael Viravens, as well as in the book "Entrañable Alicante" by Mr Arturo Tresancoras.

Finally, on 18 April 2003, the float depicting the Sentence of Jesus, featuring Christ scourged and crowned with thorns, Pilate and a Centurion, once again took to the streets of Alicante.

In May of the same year, the Governing Board approved the expansion of the sculptural group with two new figures: Claudia Procula, Pilate's wife, and a slave.
